Garfagnana: a secret place in Tuscany

Situated in the most northern part of Tuscany, nestled between the two mountain ranges of the Apuan Alps and the Apennines, Garfagnana valley is a rich green valley, full of dense forests, divided by the Serchio river, and in parts by many small lakes.

Although Garfagnana is surrounded by the natural barriers of mountains, is still an area yet to be discovered by the masses and of main stream tourism, that heads further south looking for ones typical classic idea of Tuscany and the Cyprus trees and vineyards. Here in Garfagnana, the chestnut and beech woodland and a rich natural countryside is still very much intact. The locals have always seemed to work in harmony with nature in Garfagnana and the villages and old town centres that one finds, seem to sit timelessly without disturbing the natural environment.
The villages of Garfagnana mostly have medieval origin. A lot ringed by medieval wall fortifications of great architectural interest.
Garfagnana presents very much an outdoor way of life to its inhabitants, and therefore is particularly suited to the outdoor enthusiast, or for those who wish to add an intimate and secret experience to their list of travel destinations.
In Garfagnana, by magic seem to have stopped the passage of time.
